How to Count Money

Counting cash is simple arithmetic: multiply each denomination by how many of those bills or coins you have, then add the results together.

Subtotal per denomination = Quantity × Face value
Banknotes total = sum of all banknote subtotals
Coins total = sum of all coin subtotals
Total = Banknotes total + Coins total

For a wallet with 3 × $20 bills, 2 × $5 bills, and 7 × 25¢ coins:

Pick your currency from the dropdown, enter the number of each denomination, and the total updates as you type.

Supported Denominations

The calculator supports 10 currencies. For each currency, banknotes and coins follow the official set issued by the respective central bank or mint:

A few denominations are included despite limited active circulation. The US penny (1¢) ceased active circulation in 2025 but remains legal tender. The Indian ₹2000 note was withdrawn in 2023 yet is still legal tender. These appear in the calculator so you can count them if you still have them in a jar or drawer.

Where This Tool Helps

Common situations where counting cash by denomination is useful:

Using This Calculator

Beyond entering quantities, the calculator has several features. Here's what each does and when to use it.

Currency switcher

The dropdown at the top of the calculator switches between 10 currencies. Each currency has its own list of banknote and coin denominations, automatically loaded when you pick it. Values you've entered are kept separately per currency - switching away and back restores what you had.

Show banknotes

The "show banknotes" toggle in Settings hides the banknotes section of the calculator. Useful when you're counting only coins - for example, emptying a coin jar - and want a less cluttered view.

Show coins

The "show coins" toggle in Settings hides the coins section. Useful when you're counting only banknotes - for example, a till at the start of the day before any change has been given.

Each calculation produces a URL with your currency and entered quantities as hash parameters. Copy the link and send it - the recipient opens the calculator with your values pre-filled. The hash is cleared from the address bar after loading.

Saved results

The Save button stores your current calculation. Saved entries appear in a table below the calculator showing date, time, currency, and totals. Up to 30 results are kept in your browser's local storage; when you reach the limit, the calculator asks before replacing the oldest. Data stays on your device only - it isn't synced or sent anywhere.

Settings

The Settings panel toggles parts of the interface on or off: the share link, the action buttons (Save/Reset/Copy), the saved results panel, the banknotes section, the coins section, and whether the calculator remembers your last entered values per currency between visits. The "reset settings" button restores all toggles to their defaults.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I count rolled coins?

Rolled coins (bank-wrapped rolls with a fixed count) aren't a separate input in the calculator. Multiply the number of rolls by the standard roll value and add it as banknotes. For example, a US quarter roll contains 40 coins worth $10 - so 3 rolls would be 3 × $10 = $30 added as a banknote entry.

Can I count different currencies together?

No - each currency is counted separately. Switch the currency dropdown to enter values in a different denomination set; the calculator keeps your entries per currency so switching away and back doesn't lose anything. There's no built-in conversion between currencies, since exchange rates change constantly and would make the result less reliable.

Why is the US penny still in the list if it's no longer circulating?

The US Mint ceased active production of the penny in 2025, but the coin remains legal tender and billions are still in circulation - in coin jars, pockets, and registers. The calculator keeps the penny so people pulling out long-saved coins can still count what they have.

What if I have a denomination that isn't in the list?

The calculator includes denominations that are in active circulation according to each country's central bank or mint. A few legacy denominations may be excluded - for example, the Canadian 50¢ coin, which is still minted but no longer distributed for general use. If you have such a coin, multiply its count by its value and add the result to the closest matching denomination as a separate calculation.

Do the amounts I enter need to be whole numbers?

Yes - you enter how many bills or coins of each denomination, so the values are whole numbers (you can't have 1.5 of a $20 bill). The calculator does the multiplication and produces the total in the currency's regular fractional units - dollars and cents, pounds and pence, and so on. Decimal places appear automatically in the totals where applicable.
